National Seminar on “Socio-economic and Scientific Development in Northeast India: Problems and Prospects”

Seminar Dates: 27th and 28th October, 2017

Arya Vidyapeeth College, Guwahati, one of the premier educational institutes of NE India, is going to organize a two-day National seminar on “Socio-economic and Scientific Development in Northeast India: Problems and Prospects” on 27th and 28th October, 2017. The seminar aims to provide a platform to faculty members, research scholars and academicians from diverse disciplines to discuss and debate on important issues concerning development in NE India. The seminar is designed to bring together experts from various fields to a common forum which apart from providing an excellent opportunity for learning and networking, will also help in the growth of interdisciplinary opinions for promotion of sustainable development in the NE region.

Nestled in the special corner of India, the Northeast region is a treasure trove of diversity and untapped potential. It is a composite land varying in flora and fauna, climatic condition and topographic terrain. The region is home to myriad ethnic groups with their multiplicity of language, culture and tradition. The region with its rich diversity offers a mosaic of different cultural and physical vibrancy. Owing to its geographic remoteness, the NE had been shrouded in mystery in the past but over the years, with improved means of communication and growing tourism its inherent potential is gradually being realized. The region is seen now as one of the richest hotspots of biodiversity comprising nearly 50% of the nation’s floristic wealth. But the region’s march to realize its optimum potential is not without hurdles. Social evils like witch hunting still plague the region. Despite modernization and spread of education, superstition holds sway over the people in some parts of the region. Educational and health awareness, climate change, demographic change and the perennial influx of migrants in the region are other important issues concerning the welfare of the region. The diversity which lends the region its share of uniqueness was also responsible in bringing the Northeast India in the limelight for the wrong reason. For the past few years, the region gained notoriety for being a seat of secessionist movements and insurgency.

One of objectives of the seminar will be to explore such problems that stand in the way and hinder the socio-political and economic development in the Northeast India and to discuss tentative solutions to overcome those problems.

Folk culture is the way of life in this part of the country. The seminar will also aim to provide an exploration of the treatment of folk tradition in writings from this region. Literature from the region as we know served as a doorway to many from the rest part of India opening their eyes to the world where man shares a unique bond with nature.

The seminar will seek to assess the NE region’s rich tradition of performing arts within contemporary situation and its relation to mass media.

Apart from these, the seminar will focus on the development of scientific temper as an imperative necessity to achieve the overall socio-political and economic development in the Northeast India.

With this end in view, submissions are invited from faculty members, research scholars and academicians from different disciplines to present their papers and nurture possible network.
