International Mother Language Day organised by Department of Assamese and IQAC

The Department of Assamese and IQAC in Collaboration with Pandit Giridhar Sharma Trust, Arya Vidyapeeth College (Autonomous) has organised International Mother Language Day on 21/02/2023 at 1pm at Guru Nanak Auditorium in presence of a large audience to enhance the sense of acknowledgement of mother language thereby ensuring its continuity and preservation. The celebration began with series of lectures addressing the historical origin and relevance of International Mother Language Day in contemporary context with practical examples of language usage across the globe. Dr. Gitanjali Hazarika, Convenor, International Mother Language Day Celebration welcomed the resource persons and the audience and Dr. Chanchal Baruah anchored the programme and Dr. Rahul S. Majumdar, Dean (Academic) offered the welcome address. Renowned academician, Professor Bibha Bharali, Dept. of Assamese, in her address, focused on the relevance of mother language and urged the audience to make efforts at various socio-cultural levels to address the pressing concern of death of various languages. The distinguished speaker of the day, Mr. Manoj Goswami, Editor and Chief, ND TV and Sahitya Akademi awardee,2022, also focused on the extinction of multiple languages globally in his lecture drawing examples from Western and indigenous traditions. He also addressed the historic and aesthetic traditions and constraints involved in the process of ‘language death’ and offered inspiring solutions to follow. The celebration was followed by the enactment of Jyoti Prasad Agarwala’s famous play Sonitkuawri at 5pm. The participants thoroughly enjoyed the engaging session infused with narration and music thereby making the programme a success.
