The Department of English, Arya Vidyapeeth College organised a talk on English Studies in India Today on Tuesday, the 21st of May, 2019 at 1.00 pm at the Conference Hall. Prof. Nandana Dutta, Department of English, Gauhati University was the resource person for the same. The programme commenced with the welcome address which was delivered by Dr. Madhulika Singh (HOD, English). Prof. Nandana Dutta addressed the interdisciplinary nuances of English Studies and emphasised on the ideological and historical trajectories of English Studies with reference to the construction of national goals and identity.
She also dwelt on the politics of production of systematic knowledge in terms of syllabus formulation and the consequent challenges encountered by the academic community. While mapping the discourse of English Studies in India, she focused on ‘prior literacies’ in the context of socio-cultural influence on academic scenario which generated immense queries and lively interaction among the participants. The thought-provoking lecture weaved with multiple examples of contemporary academic scenario where an ‘English Teacher’ is constantly performing the alien tongue proved deeply engrossing for the participants. The participants comprised of the faculty members of various colleges, students and the teaching faculty of different Departments of Arya Vidyapeeth College. The talk proved to be a great success.
