Report on ICSSR-NERC sponsored National Workshop on Socio-cultural Perspective of Translation in Writings from Northeast India.
The Literary Cell, Arya Vidyapeeth College, Guwahati, with support from Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of the college organized a weeklong ICSSR-NERC sponsored National Workshop on Socio-cultural Perspective of Translation in Writings from Northeast India from 21st October to 26th October 2019 at Arya Vidyapeeth College.
On 21st October, 2019, the workshop was inaugurated by Dr. Pradip Kr. Bhattacharyya, Principal of Arya Vidyapeeth College. Mrs. Utjala Barman, Convener of the Literary Cell, delivered the welcome address. While stating the aims and objectives of the workshop, Mrs. Barman added that Northeast India being a land of diversity necessitated translation in order to maintain linguistic and cultural cohesion. Prof. Mohd. Asaduddin, an eminent translator and academician from Jamia Millia Islamia University, New Delhi, was the Keynote Speaker and in his keynote address he gave a comprehensive view on the role of Translation in the development of Literature in Northeast India.
A total of forty-seven participants from different colleges and universities of Northeast India actively and enthusiastically participated in the weeklong workshop. Resource persons from academic institutions, veteran journalist and media editor conducted the technical sessions and discussed threadbare on the thrust areas like Role of Translation in multi-lingual and multi-cultural society, Dynamics and Challenges in Translation, Theory and Practice of Translation, Cultural Turn in Translation, Translation and Media: sub-titling and dubbing, Translation and Gender, Post-Colonial Translation and Future of Translation.There were Practice Sessions where the participants translated texts from different source languages to different target languages. The workshop highlighted the new critical insights in understanding translation of text, explored the new methodological and interdisciplinary approaches to translation, and focussed on the emerging theories and practice of translation.
On 26th October, 2019, Prof. Pranab Jyoti Das, President, Governing Body of Arya Vidyapeeth College, presided over the Valedictory session. The renowned writer Mr. Dhruba Hazarika graced the Valedictory session as the Chief Guest and in his valedictory address, he stated that the process of translation should be an act of love. The participants found the workshop very informative and enriching. In their feedback speeches, they expressed that more such workshops on Translation should be organised in the future.
