A two day seminar on the topic Cell signaling, cancer Biology and Therapeutics was organized by the Department of Zoology, Arya Vidyapeeth College as a part of the DBT Star College Scheme on 3rd and 4th October, 2019. This is the 3rd program organized by the Department in a row under the scheme for the benefit of the students. The seminar was designed to broaden the perspective of the undergraduate students on the recent developments in Cancer Biology, its cell signaling pathway and therapeutics that may motivate them to pursue their research in this arena and contribute towards a healthy society and the seminar truly served its cause.
On 3rd October, the keynote address was offered by Dr Ajaikumar B Kunnumakkara, Professor, Cancer Biology Laboratory, Department of Bioengineering and Biosciences, IIT Guwahati. He gave an elaborate idea and shared his expertise on the relation of diet and dietary compounds such as curcumin in cancer prevention. The students as well as the teachers vividly discussed on various aspects regarding it with him. The Guest lecture was delivered by Dr Avdhesh Rai, Assistant Research Officer, Dr B Borooah Cancer Institute, Guwahati. He spoke on the prevalence of head and neck cancer in NE India along with the awareness and diagnosis of cancer symptoms.
On 4th October, the students from 1st sem,3rd sem and 5th sem Zoology major gave presentation on different topics of cancer. There were 10 presentations and each was evaluated by the teachers. The student presentation session was chaired by Prof. Pranab Jyoti Das,President, Governing Body, Arya Vidyapeeth College and Professor(Retd), Department of Chemistry, gauhati University. He briefed the students on the relevance of the topic in the present health scenario. The student presented on topics like Chordoma, Ayurveda Revisited with special reference to Curcumin, Blood cancer, coping with cancer in children and many more. The students were awarded with best presentation award after the end of the session.
